I was playing a videogame. I was chill, easy, and though “let’s hear this promo I received while playing, let’s just create the proper soundtrack for my gaming experience”. Never have I ever made a better choice: Hydro’s new EP Ethos is able to make you concentrate, focus, really like eyes on the prize shit, I won the tournament and started winning and winning. After having listened to it twice in a loop, I felt like I was drifting apart with my mind, because the drum complexity and the overall atmosphere were pure gold. When I listen to good music, I tend to de-focus from reality, but when I listen to awesome music, I focus more.
I was particularly impressed from the overall minimalistic vibe of this work. We’re talking about a four songs EP that keep the tones down while still being kind of punchy, it keeps the voice under the provocation threshold while still saying out kind of loud what it thinks. It’s like those friends that always have the dirty line to say but never appear arrogant when they say it: just brutally honest. This, in my opinion, is a plus. The EP is all a huge honest dirty line in your face, makes you feel what you should feel, and is elegant in doing it, in such a way that after it has finished, you don’t blame it but yourself for how you feel. Ain’t that crazy!
A good ranking for this album would have been a 5, if only there wasn’t one critic to move: it is all a bit too similar to itself, it doesn’t really create a break between tracks, which is both a good and a bad thing, but more a bad one in my opinion. However, I want to award it with 4.5 / 5 jakes and encourage you all to listen to it, to buy it, and to sustain the big work of one of the biggest name in the scene, Hydro. His name has been on flyers of events and on big labels for the last two decades, he got game someone would say. Support is essential for Drum & Bass to carry on, so show yours and visit the links we provide you. Stay Hydrated!
