Who the hell is VSC, you would say? Well he’s someone you should get familiar with. Despite being very well-known in his city and scene, which is the italian capital Rome, he is definitely not outside of it. However, his sound and his musical productions suggest that he might one day as well be. Thanks to the efforts of BNCExpress, a small italian label with the headquarters in Czech Republic (Prague), his latest EP composed of 3 soulful songs just saw the light. This label is also not known for the many, but if one just checks, well there are more than 100 releases out there (remarkable!). The beatport profile for VSC, instead, ranks only one song which is the first of the new EP (All I Need, link).
You shouldn’t get all suspicious now, acting like you know shit and -who da hell is this guy with one release wasting my time-, because Vasco (his real name) is really a fucking junglist with the biggest J you can think of. He is resident DJ at one of the most important jungle events in Rome (Trust in Jungle), he has played at the Outlook festival in Croatia (-oh cool, I saw Andy C there!- you might say), and he’s into a lot of the scene that is building up in Italy. You might not have heard of him yet, but it seems likely that you will in the future! Mixing Liquid Funk and Rock sounds he manages to keep an old-school musical vibe while letting the drums create the perfect texture for a trip to somewhere else in your mind.
This new EP is composed of three songs: All I Need, Kimono and Starfire. The three of them are all pretty peculiar, having interesting sound samples as well as very well-refined guitar riffs probably played for the occasion (I really love that). I personally didn’t experience any boredom while listening, something that happens also with way bigger artists. I didn’t perceive immaturity in sounds, which is usually the case when you decide to listen to someone which is not in the spotlight yet. I didn’t think that something was lacking, I didn’t, I didn’t, I didn’t. You know why? Because he is complete and mature, a perfect circle of Liquid Funk and Soul mixed together in the best junglist you can catch around. With emerging artists I love to try and find some comparisons with the famous ones: I see a mixture of Silence Groove and Lenzman. For what concerns the EP, I have to admit that I loved it. It is balanced, well-refined, well-mixed and mastered, and the songs are just like those sugar candies that have some juice inside: you keep working them out because they never cease to release that nice flavour, and at some point boom, here’s the juice. 4 Jakes!
