These days, there is a voice in my head which is literally screaming what’s happening in MethLab! The last releases have been awesome, pioneeristic, innovative and evolved from the bunch of average Drum & Bass that usually populates the dancefloors. I’ve been particularly impressed with the latest works of all the artists that populate the roster of the label, which is truly one of the biggest names in Neurofunk at this point. I mean, the name MethLab could suggest that there is a little extra power in the creative direction, but apart from jokes, those dudes seem not wanting to stop. We recently discussed Hydro‘s new Ethos EP, we also covered the new split EP from Terminal (which includes also MethLab). In a big picture, MethLab is delivering the shit!

This new EP is called MONOLETH, and is a comparticipation between Aethek (Billain), Broken Note, Hybris, Audeka, Bells Worth, Volatile Cycle & Barbarix and Rawtekk. The sound of the EP is unconventional: rhythm is slow, half-sized with respect to the 174 bpm timing of Drum & Bass, more on a hip hop range. It feels like machines are gonna blow up the spot if you don’t stop them, judging from the sounds you hear. The experimental level in this release is at its most, especially in the first track where a shower of kicks ends the song, progressively faster, but still keeping the time. What I also liked is the general atmosphere: dark, heavy, no-way-out-like, an ordered chaos of drums and basslines and synths that create a mechanical sound war. Truly fascinating.

In the moment of giving a rank to this EP, we cannot avoid the fact that it was made by many different artists, which usually means that the production stress and the creativity run-out are less enhanced. However, we must also consider that still this EP took 2 years to make. Therefore, we have to balance out the two things and rank it for what it’s worth: 4/5 jakes. This is absolutely a good mark, because the sound was blasting and heavy, the mixdowns were good, the overall impact on my head after two listens was that I kinda needed a shower because I sweated anxiety, so the job was done properly. We encourage you to give it a buy, going to Beatport at the link below, where you will find all the productions by MethLab, and to give it a try at the soundcloud link just here.
