In a very recent article, we told you that “Emperor is up to something“. Well, ain’t we right as usual? Here he is, dropping his new Shadow EP right today for Neosignal, blowing your minds and shaking your bones with some of the heaviest drums and basslines of this very 2017. The producer from Manchester has been a little bit out of the release scene recently, but he’s back with this marvellous 4-songs pack that basically ensures every DJ in the place has enough ammo to survive the next dancefloor war.

The first track (Defect) is a mind blowing one: the LFO goes crazy on that lead and your head just follows, but all this collapses suddenly when Shadow starts. The chill melody of the intro brings you out of space for that 30 seconds, but this doesn’t last for long, because you’re brought back to reality from another techy nasty drop. I do imagine dancing to Shadow, and I can’t wait for that to happen (as a matter of fact, it is happening, right now, in my room).

Emperor, challenging you to be a better man.

The prize for the weirdest track of the EP is won by the third one, Calypso, and its ascending lead that serves as a stunning sound to make everyone rush to the floor. The idea is kinda crazy and the song is a bit like the opposite of a drum & bass song: the drums are lightweight, the bass is not that present, the lead is accentuated as hell. Usually this is the premise of a bad mixdown, and therefore a fail. But not if you’re Emperor. The song is fine as it is, with drums, bass and lead the way they are, and I personally am fascinated by the way he managed to merge these 3 elements in one the way he did.

It all ends like -brace yourselves, winter is coming– with the song Tireless. After the clubbing of the previous 3, meaning that they hit your head like a viking club with horns and spikes, you can’t rest. As the title states, you have to be tireless. The song quickly rises up hyping you once more and drops a serious sequence of bass notes mixed with hihats and glitches that are just as heavy as the previous three songs. No quitting, no chill, just serious, heavy,  consistent drum & bass. This is why I like Emperor, and this is why I consider this EP as one of the best promos I received this year. Go and check it out at the links provided hereunder, or simply listen to it in the SoundCloud embedded playlist at the end of the article. Have fun!
